Long - term X - ray variability and state transition of GX 339 – 4

چکیده

With extensive monitoring data spanning over 30 years from Vela 5B, Ariel 5, Ginga, Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and BeppoSAX, we find evidence for long-term X-ray variability on timescales ∼ 190–240 d from the black hole low-mass X-ray binary system GX339–4. Such variability resembles the outburst cycle of Z Cam-type dwarf novae, in which the standard disc instability model plays a crucial role. If such a model is applicable to GX339–4, then the observed variability might be due to the irradiation of an unstable accretion disc. We show that within the framework of the X-ray irradiation model, when the accretion rate exceeds a critical value, GX 339–4 enters a ‘flat-topped’ high/soft state, such as seen in 1998, which we suggest corresponds to the ‘standstill’ state of Z Cam systems.

We report the results of observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer of the black-hole candidate GX 339-4 during the state transition of 1998. We find that both the X-ray spectrum and the characteristic of the time variability after the transition are typical of a high/soft state. We cannot exclude that the source went through an Intermediate State before entering the high state. We discu...

Accretion disc variability in the hard state of black hole X-ray binaries

XMM-Newton X-ray spectra of the hard state Black Hole X-Ray Binaries (BHXRBs) SWIFT J1753.5-0127 and GX 339-4 show evidence for accretion disc blackbody emission, in addition to hard power-laws. The soft and hard band Power-Spectral Densities (PSDs) of these sources demonstrate variability over a wide range of time-scales. However, on time-scales of tens of seconds, corresponding to the putativ...

The Flux-dependent Rms Variability of X-ray Binaries in the Optical

A linear relation between absolute rms variability and flux in X-ray observations of compact accreting sources has recently been identified. Such a relation suggests that X-ray lightcurves are non-linear and composed of a lognormal distribution of fluxes. Here, a first investigation of the optical rms vs. flux behavior in X-ray binaries is presented. Fast timing data on three binaries in the X-...

Previous work by Motch et al. (1985) suggested that in the low/hard state of GX 339−4, the soft X-ray power-law extrapolated backward in energy agrees with the IR flux level. Corbel and Fender (2002) later showed that the typical hard state radio power-law extrapolated forward in energy meets the backward extrapolated X-ray power-law at an IR spectral break, which was explicitly observed twice ...

Coronal–Temporal Correlations in GX 339−4: Hysteresis, Possible Reflection Changes, and Implications for ADAFs

We present spectral fits and timing analysis of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of GX 339−4. These observations were carried out over a span of more than two years and encompassed both the soft/high and hard/low states. Two observations were simultaneous with Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics observations. Hysteresis in the soft state/hard state transition is observed. ...
